Outplant methodology: Large, healthy corals that are ready to be outplanted are taken from the nurseries and transported to the outplant site. The corals are placed in an area with calcareous algae that help their fixation and settlement, they are joined with marine epoxy, nails and tie straps.

Species information: Acropora cervicornis- Staghorn coral - Staghorn coral

• Colonies of staghorn coral are pale brown with white tips and get their color from the algae that live within their tissue.
• They have branches like the antlers of a deer. The branches are usually 1 to 3 inches thick.
• They provide important services to human societies. These include protecting thousands of kilometers of shoreline from wave erosion and protecting lagoons and mangroves, which are vital habitats for a variety of commercial and non-commercial species.
• They can live 4 to 7 years.

Outplant methodology: Corals grown in nurseries will be used for outplant, which are distributed on concrete bases located in an area of 10 and 15m² to restore de reef.

• They exhibit the fastest growth and are excellent reef builders.
• They are part of the marine community within the Bay Islands National Marine Park.

Utila Coral Restoration

Outplant methodology: Coral fragments will be fixed to the clean substrate by means of a marine epoxy that hardens over time, permanently affirming the fragments.

• Of all the coral cover in Honduras, only 1% is composed of the Acropora species. Therefore, our restoration efforts are vital for reef health and biodiversity.
